Here is my dilema. I live in Edmonton Alberta and Edmonton is setup as a grid system which means there is not one curvy road within 300 miles from me. The other issue is that we are one of the worst cities for speed cameras and speed traps. Essentially you cannot speed here big brother is always watching.
I used to LOVE driving but when I moved to Edmonton 10 years ago my love of driving has steadily declined. Now driving is nothing but a goddamn chore. I would give anything for a teleportation device.
I’m at the point where I consider swerving into oncoming traffic to end it all. Stop and go traffic, straight line driving, constantly monitoring your speed has made my life fucking miserable as of late.
Is there any cars out there that would bring the excitement back to my daily life or am I screwed no matter what I drive?
I’d like to go from this:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
to this:
My only requirement is that it seats 4 and is under $30K

Maybe not fun, but I’m sure you could get something terrifying. Something unsafe-at-any-speed.

Nissan GTR or Porsche 911 Turbo.
AWD give you lots of traction off the line, and as long as you don’t break the speed limit, you can accelerate to it as fast as you can, then maintain speed.
Oh under $30k? Maybe a used Golf R?

VW buses, of any generation. Because even though you’re going straight, the wheel is always over to one side, steering into the wind.

I like how my Z4 just kind of bounces ever so slightly and randomly on the freeway at the speed limit. It’s such a random frequency between smooth road and little random bump. I enjoy that for some reason :] Small, low, and bumpy :]
As for suggestions..... Pontiac G8 !!!

You need something you can just floor all the time. Like an 80s Tercel, a Subaru Justy, or something else small and slow.

Get a ~50hp Euro supermini. If you’re going fast enough to break the speed limit, you’re more likely to get a thumbs-up from the cops than a ticket.

Anything old, slow, or cheap.
My ‘92 F-150 feels both terrifying and exciting at the speed limit on a freeway. Same with all my other garbage.
Drive a modern car and there’s no drama.

A diesel smart. I mean, you can redline the underpowered sucker through almost all of the gears, and still be under the speed limit + be returning a sweet 70 mpg..
And uh, since the W450s weren’t good at handling, you wouldn’t want to turn anyway. xD

Groat rd ftw..
I had a mk3 Jetta when I was there, it was pretty good- bumped along with a few suspension mods.. It didn’t do winter though so I had a mk2 from Oct-May. I also lived in Spruce so I got a freeway blast every day.

I test drove one of those when they first came out in 2006. They were advertising lease payments of $210/month but I never read the very fine print which was with $5000 down. I was 20 years old and just moved to a new city on my own so as you can imagine I did not have 5K just laying around.
The transmission was horrible but 70mpgs and a very cheap payment made it very tempting. I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

Hmm I know speed limits are bummers but can you pull a 90 degree turn at the speed limit?( 4 way intersection) Auto Cross in your future. even if it is just cones in a parking lot. Do a figure 8. Maybe a Driving school......

New or newish cars? No, they are too capable to be anything approaching fun at legal speeds without curve.
Therefore, go old. Buy something with style and you’re having fun even sitting still.

Ugh, I hate how Mercedes-Benz does that. They don’t seem to believe in low down payments. In the USA, you can get a smart for a dp as low as $2k...but still, that’s a $2k down payment on a cheap-ish car.

Definitely any sort of classic. Big old classic American steel. Screw safety and fuel mileage or any modicum of normal car reliability. There is no way it would not be fun to cruise down the street in a classic Caddy or something. Otherwise, anything convertible could be fun too. Also REALLY loud exhausts could still be fun. Or alternatively my favorite solution would be a Morgan 3 wheeler or one of those Polaris Slingshot things.

Ive got another suggestion:
Why not take up flying? That certainly could be fun and there is certainly a ton of space up there to fly around without dealing with pesky speed limits or going in straight lines. Your speed "limit" is just the point at which the plane would break apart.

and
under $30K
Lower your limit to $10k, and spend the remaining $20k on other things you love. Holiday trips. Other things. Maybe fly to a place where it is nice to drive this summer (or another season). $20k! Think of the posibilities! You seem to live in car driving hell, so why spend that much money on a car that won’t bring any kind of extra smile to your face?

Yeah, you need power and AWD. I guess a used STI would work too. If you didn’t have a 30k budget, your ideal car would definitely be a GRC Fiesta. 0-60 in 1.9 seconds, top speed of maybe 125?

Move to another province. :)
Also, speed cameras?! Legend has it that in the ‘80s, people called the Deerfoot Trail (Hwy 2?), the Deerfoot 500, because it was 150 or bust.
Get a muscle car for some mad pulls in between speed traps.

The whole constant risk of dying in a fender bender though certainly would put me at unease. Having some sheet metal and seat belts and airbags in the way are certainly a requirement to me. I think it is the pinnacle of automotive enjoyment but the similar experience certainly could be accomplished in sports cars to some degree.

Being stuck in ON, I’d love to be able to drive out to BC and try some of the mountain roads! Lately I’ve been trying to find some of the neat roads that branch off of Hwy 7 east of Toronto. They are kinda grid-dy until you get out past Peterborough, then you can find some neat stuff.

Everytime I drove a Jeep Wrangler (trade-ins mostly) I found I drove under the speed limit everywhere i went because the sensation of speed in those terribly wobbly, noisy boxes on wheels made me fear going any faster.
I don’t know if that qualifies as fun, but it was interesting.
Hitting joints in the road and feeling the car want to yaw, fabulous stuff.

If you can live with the awful fuel consumption, what you need is the biggest effing American 50s/60s land yacht you can find. A huge old Caddy with tail fins or something. With a convertible top. You need a cruiser, not a canyon carver or drag racer.
